John Hansard Gallery, part of the University of Southampton, a leading public gallery of contemporary art and an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, is seeking to appoint a new Director.

The Gallery, established in 1979, has played a dynamic role in the cultural life of Southampton and the region, through its critically acclaimed curatorial and education programme, central to which is the Gallery’s contribution to the world renowned research culture of the University. In the Spring of 2017, the John Hansard Gallery enters a new chapter in its history as it re-locates into the centre of Southampton, at the heart of the City’s Cultural Quarter in a stunning arts complex of gallery, performing arts and film/studio space. The move will triple the gallery space available and will provide the new Director with an opportunity to create even more impact, developing the Gallery as a catalyst for change and development for the University and the city, as a leading developer of arts production and as an organisation reaching out to diverse audiences locally, nationally and internationally.

In the new Director, the University of Southampton seeks a significant player in the contemporary art scene - someone with a track record of success in curating interesting programmes and exhibitions, who is innovative with an international perspective, who can work with multiple stakeholders and take an imaginative approach to developing audiences. You will have the vision to lead the John Hansard Gallery on its new journey, building on success to capitalise on the opportunity which the new location provides to develop profile and impact. You will be an excellent networker, partnership builder, able to work effectively with established and emerging artists with the ability to create unique opportunities building on the multi-disciplinary context which the University offers.
