Greenham Common Open Exhibition 2014

Established and emerging artists from the United Kingdom are invited to submit their work to the New Greenham Arts (NGA) Gallery and exhibition space for their Open Exhibition through the autumn period.

Works will be considered from all media, both new and traditional. Artists may submit up to three works to be considered for selection.

The theme for this year’s Greenham Common Open is ‘Portraiture’. Typically this refers to images of people, either individually or as a group and is a practice that dates back to cave painting. Historically portraiture has documented royal dynasties, social hierarchies and changes in fashion, and it is also associated with commerce, wealth and celebrity. With the flourishing of social networks, portraiture - particularly the ‘selfie’ - has mushroomed as an arts practice. Contemporary approaches to portraiture are encouraged.

New Greenham Arts is based on the de-commissioned American nuclear air base at Greenham Common. Our current visual arts strategy explores the geographic, political and emotional themes drawn from the significance of its location. The exhibition aims to show work in a diverse range of media. The selection panel will be looking for innovation and crafted execution within the chosen art form, with particular emphasis on works that reflect these themes and concerns.

The selection panel will consist of Mark Segal – Visual Arts Consultant, a previous winner of the Greenham Open, a member of the West Berkshire & North Hampshire Open Studios scheme, and one studio artist resident at NGA. One artist may be selected from the show to exhibit their work in a solo exhibition in 2015 at New Greenham Arts.
