Modern History Vols. I, II and III are three distinct group exhibitions that took place between April and November 2015 at Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool, The Atkinson, Southport and Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre. Guest curated by internationally respected curator Lynda Morris, the exhibitions featured new commissions and existing works by national and international contemporary artists based in the North West. By taking the theme of ‘Modern History’, the exhibitions offered perspectives on cultural, social, and political change, from artists across different generations, with works reflecting on local and global issues, largely post-1969 to the present day.

The Modern History series, which aimed to promote the talent of contemporary artists living and working in the region, was developed in parallel with a pilot mentoring programme through which 7 artists and arts professionals from the North West region are currently being mentored by local, regional and national influencers, artists, curators, directors, writers and publishers including Kathleen Soriano, Miles Thurlow, Francis McKee, Sarah Fisher and Sarah Auld.

Supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England with additional support from Lancashire County Council, University of Salford, Manchester School of Art and CVAN NW network members.
