EMVAN's event will explore notions of success and failure within the visual arts and how they have featured in visual arts practices, as well as what is needed in order to succeed, what success looks like and how to make success out of failure.
If one person's success is another's sell out, if critical acclaim is prized over commercial success, and if success is perfection and therefore unattainable, it's fair to say that success is a subjective and often emotive subject. Is it also overrated? Failure has been a subject of investigation for many artists in recent times, given the broad arena it presents for experimentation and risk taking. In the realm of contemporary visual arts, what does it mean to succeed or fail?
Our keynote speaker for this event is Lisa Le Feuvre, Head of Sculpture Studies at the Henry Moore Institute and editor of Failure (Whitechapel: Documents of Contemporary Art, 2010).
Lisa will be accompanied by EMVAN members who will present 'papers' on the theme, and Russell Martin, Programme Manager at Artquest who will share the findings from ‘For the love of it', a conference which examined what it means to be a professional artist today.
